Daniel Lapson (Skokie, Ill.) was named Most Valuable Player after hitting .581 (29 k, 4 e, 43 att.) in two matches Thursday night at Max Stern Athletic Center, including a 16-0-23 (.696) outing in the finale, as the Yeshiva University men's volleyball team hoisted its second Hudson Valley Men's Athletic Conference (HVMAC) Championship crown with a pair of straight-set victories.
Top-seeded YU took down No. 4-seed Webb Institute in the semifinals by scores of 25-10, 25-14 and 25-14, before moving past third-seeded Sarah Lawrence by 25-14, 25-14 and 25-15 counts.
Following the match, the HVMAC All-Conference teams were announced, and three members of head coach Arnold Ross's Maccabees were cited on the squad. Along with Lapson, senior co-captain
Elchanan Margolis (Toronto, Ont.; 13 kills and four service aces on the night) and junior setter
Adam Rhodes (Los Angeles, Calif.; tournament-high 65 assists) garnered all-conference accolades.
Yeshiva has won four-consecutive regular-season crowns, and captured its first tournament title since the 2010 campaign.
In the semifinals against Webb, Lapson hit .450 (13-4-20) and added one service ace, while Margolis (match-high nine digs) registered 10 points on four service aces and six kills. Rhodes dished out 31 assists for the hosts, while senior co-captain
Jared Rechnitz (Los Angeles, Calif.; 4-1-10, .300) and junior middle blocker
Menachem Goldstein (Chicago, Ill.; 7-3-13, .308) both hit .300-plus on the day.
As a team, the Macs out-hit Webb by a .297 to minus-.014 count, and held a 52-19 edge in points.
In the title match against the Gryphons, Lapson's exploits and Rhodes's setting (34 assists) pushed YU to a .405 hitting percentage (41-9-79) en route to the title. Yeshiva scored a 48-27 edge in points, including a 6-1 margin in service aces.
Goldstein hit .389 against Sarah Lawrence on 11 kills, four errors and 18 attacks, while adding a solo block and one service ace. Freshman defensive specialist
Jorge Dabah (Miami, Fla.) picked up nine aces at the service line combined, including four against the Gryphons. Margolis rounded out his collegiate career with seven kills, a .333 hitting percentage and a match-best 10 digs after entering the week ranked No. 13 in NCAA Division III in digs per set.
Interestingly, the HVMAC title was the second of the 2012-13 academic year for sophomore reserve Yossi Lipton (Toronto, Ont.), as he was a member of head coach Brendan Donoghue's conference championship-winning men's cross country team in the fall. Lipton hit .250 on the evening with seven kills on 16 attempts.
