BOX SCOREWEST HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.— The Yeshiva University women's tennis team was defeated by St. Joseph's-Long Island 5-3 in the semifinal round of the 2014 Skyline Conference championship at Hempstead Lake Indoor Tennis Center.
With the loss, the Maccabees (7-4), who were the No. 3 seed for the tournament were eliminated, while St. Joseph's-Long Island (9-3), the No. 2 seed, advances to the championship round to face the winner between No. 1 seed Farmingdale State and No. 4 seed Sage College.
The Maccabees lost 2-1 in doubles matches. They won at the No. 1 position as
Shani Hava and
Jannah Eichenbaum were 8-4 winners over the St. Joseph's-Brooklyn team of Shannon Merker and Kelley McGrath. At No. 2 doubles, the St. Joseph's-Long Island duo of Rita Wehrli and Erika Hesselbirg beat
Jenny Tepler and
Tova Hirt 8-1. At No. 3 the St. Joseph's-Long Island pair of Kerri Cetin and Lindsey Merker were 8-6 winners over
Galila Shapiro and
Lindsay Frucher.
In singles play, at No. 1 Hava won 6-1, 6-2 over Shannon Merker. At No. 2 McGrath beat Shapiro 6-1, 7-5. In No. 3 singles it was Eichenbaum scoring a 6-1, 6-2 win against Wehrli. In No. 5 singles, Hesselbirg beat Tepler 6-2, 6-1. At No. 6 singles it was Lindsay Merker over
Anita Levy 6-3, 6-2. The No. 4 singles matches between Frucher and Cetin went unfinished.
