HOBOKEN, N.J.— The 2014 Yeshiva baseball season opened with a bang, literally!
Jake Frankel led off the season with a solo homerun to left field in the top of the first inning to give the Maccabees a 1-0 lead, but Yeshiva fell short in the end as the Maccabees were swept in a doubleheader at Stevens Institute of Technology 10-1 and 13-0.
Yeshiva is now 0-2 (0-2 CUNYAC) on the brand new season, while Stevens is now 2-0 (2-0 CUNYAC).
Frankel's homerun was on a two strike fast ball that he lifted high into the air getting the season started in the best way possible.
But the host Ducks came back with six runs in the bottom of the second, two more in the fourth and another two in the sixth to take a 10-1 lead en route to the win.
Jonathan Gardner took the ball in game one and suffered the loss after going 4.0 innings and allowing eight runs (five earned) on eight hits, while striking out two.
Zevi Weisinger pitched the last two frames and allowed two runs on five hits.
In the second game, Stevens scored a run in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead. The Ducks proceeded to plate three in the third and eight in the fourth to lead 12-0 after four.
Zachary Feld was the starting pitcher in game two and picked up the loss. He went 3.0 innings and allowed seven runs (four earned) on eight hits and struck out two batters.
Yeshiva is back in action next Sunday March 2 for a home doubleheader against the City College of New York (CCNY) at Taft High School at 12 noon.
