NEW YORK, N.Y.— After a solid first season as a varsity sport, the Yeshiva softball program has earned a high seed in the 2014 Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conferences (HVIAC) softball championship this Sunday at Mary Levine Field on the campus of Sarah Lawrence College.
After going undefeated in HVIAC regular season play, the Maccabees earned the No. 2 seed for the four team tournament (St. Joseph's-Brooklyn also finished undefeated and got the No. 1 seed via a coin flip. The two teams never played their regular season contest due to poor weather and field conditions on the dates of their scheduled games) and will play No. 3 seed Sarah Lawrence College in the opening round game at 1 p.m. (St. Joseph's-Brooklyn will play No. 4 College of New Rochelle at 11 a.m.). If the Maccabees beat Sarah Lawrence, they will vie for the championship against the winner between St. Joseph's-Brooklyn and College of New Rochelle at 3 p.m.
Yeshiva comes into the tournament with a 5-6 overall record, which includes a pair of wins over College of New Rochelle and Sarah Lawrence College as well as a victory over Globe Institute of Technology. Yeshiva has a .273 team batting average, and the Maccabees have been led by
Kayla Applebaum with a .440 batting average, followed by
Erin Potasnick who is hitting .407, with an unbelievable .889 slugging percentage.
In the circle,
Rachel Mirsky has picked up three wins this season and has struck out 12 batters.
Rena Genauer has earned two wins while fanning 14 batters.
