Men's Basketball Falls to Lehman in Overtime

Box Score

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's basketball team suffered a hard-fought loss to Lehman, 86-82, in overtime on Wednesday evening at the Max Stern Athletic Center. The Maccabees fall to 6-5, while the Lightning up their record to 8-2.

Senior forward Shelby Rosenberg, who scored 29 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, led the Maccabees. In addition to his double-double, he dished out four assists and forced three steals. Junior forward Michael Berg had a double-double of his own, scoring 19 points with 10 rebounds and stole the ball three times. Freshman guard Judah Cohen produced 21 points and had three steals.

Yeshiva had control of the contest in the second half, as Berg converted a layup to put the home team up, 55-44, with 13:15 remaining in regulation time. With just over nine minutes left, Rosenberg nailed a jump shot in the paint to increase the Maccabees' advantage to 62-51.

Lehman tilted the tide into its favor by scoring eight unanswered points, in a span of 2:26, to shrink Yeshiva's lead to 62-59, with 6:38 left to play.

Later in the second half, Lehman jumped out to a 73-72 lead, with just over a minute remaining. Cohen answered back by successfully converting a three-point shot to put the Maccabees up, 75-73, with 35 seconds remaining. Olando Minott hit two free throws to tie the game at 75. Both teams could not find the basket for the remaining 28 seconds of regulation, including two missed foul shots by Yeshiva in the closing seconds, so the game went into overtime.

In the extra session, Rosenberg hit a jump shot to put Yeshiva up, 77-75. That would be the last time the Maccabees held the lead, as the Lightning scored five unanswered points to go up, 80-77, with 1:41 remaining in overtime. Rosenberg's layup pulled Yeshiva to within one, but Lehman was able to hit key free throws down the stretch to earn the non-conference victory.

The opening half was close throughout. Berg's jumper gave Yeshiva a 35-31 lead, which was the largest by either team in the opening 20 minutes. Lehman rallied for a 9-2 run to take the lead, 40-37, going into intermission. That would set the stage for a dramatic second half and overtime.

Yeshiva will be back in action in two weeks for a non-conference road game against New York University. The game will begin at 7:00 p.m.
