Box Score BROOKLYN, N.Y.— The Yeshiva men's volleyball team won a thriller in five sets over St. Joseph's-Brooklyn 3-2 (25-21, 22-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-13) on Tuesday night.
The win now improves the Maccabees to 6-10 overall and winners of four in a row, while improving to 3-1 in the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC). St. Joseph's-Brooklyn is now 7-5 overall and 1-1 in HVIAC play.
Each match was close with all sets being decided four points or less. The evening saw a total of 37 ties and 19 lead changes.
After Yeshiva won the first set, the host Bears won the second and the third to go ahead 2-1. The Maccabees tied the match and forced a deciding set by breaking a 20-20 tie late in the fourth set by scoring four points in a row to go ahead 24-20. The Bears came back with one point, before a kill by Marks secured the win and forced a fifth set.
In the deciding set, the score was tied six times and the lead changed hands twice. Yeshiva trailed only early in the set when down 3-1. The Maccabees rallied back to lead 4-3 and they never trailed again. The score was tied at 4-4, 10-10, 12-12 and 13-13, before Yeshiva scored the final two points of the contest. A kill by Gartenberg made the score 14-13 before an attack error by the Bears officially gave Yeshiva the win.
The Maccabees was led by
Tuvia Marks with 16 kills, a .519 attack percentage and four total blocks, while
Benjamin Mann had 12 kills and 13 digs.
Eliakim Gartenberg had 10 kills and two total blocks, while
Kolya Miller had nine kills and eight digs.
Mishael Miller had 14 digs, while
Joseph Lipton had five kills and 21 digs.
Jorge Dabah had 46 assists and 13 digs.
St. Joseph's-Brooklyn was led by Raul Urshela with 20 kills and 11 digs, while Taso Kostikas had 12 kills and 17 digs.
Yeshiva is back in action on Sunday for a Skyline Conference tri-match at Kean University. Yeshiva will play the College of Mount Saint Vincent at 1 p.m. before playing Kean at 3 p.m.
