Clutch Free Throws Help Men's Basketball Team Hang On Against Farmingdale State

Box Score

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's basketball team won a thrilling Skyline Conference game over Farmingdale State, 71-69, at the Max Stern Athletic Center on Wednesday evening. Yeshiva now bumps its record to 7-6 overall, and 5-3 in Skyline play, while Farmingdale State falls to 8-9 overall, and 8-4 in conference contests.

The victory did not come easy as the Maccabees trailed, 66-64, with just 1:08 left to play after leading by as many as 14 in the second half. With less than a minute remaining in regulation, junior guard Jordan Hod found senior forward Shelby Rosenberg, who laid the ball up and in to tie the game at 66. On the next possession, junior forward Michael Berg forced the steal and fed the ball to Hod who drew a foul. He hit both free throws to allow Yeshiva to regain the lead, 68-66, with just 27 seconds left.

After getting a key stop on defense, Rosenberg was fouled and went to the line. He made the second, after missing the first, to extend the Maccabees' lead to three. It became a free throw battle on both sides. Down by three, with two seconds left, Jarred Marrow of the Rams went to the line to shoot two, after Yeshiva fouled him intentionally to prevent him from hitting a potential tying three-point field goal. He made the first, but intentionally missed the second. The ball went into the arms of senior guard Shaje Weiss which clinched the win for Yeshiva.

The home team opened the second half on a 9-2 run to take a commanding lead. The Rams would fight back to temporally take the lead late in regulation, but Yeshiva's clutch defense and free throw shooting helped the Maccabees earn a key conference win. In the opening half, Yeshiva outscored Farmingdale State, 37-30.

Weiss led the Maccabees with 20 points. Hod added 15 points with five assists, while Rosenberg scored 13, dished out five assists, blocked four shots, and forced three steals. Berg scored eight points and dished out nine assists.

Yeshiva will be back in action on Saturday, for another Skyline home game against Old Westbury, beginning at 8:30 p.m.
