Box Score NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University women's basketball team suffered a hard-fought loss to Skyline rival St. Joseph's College of Long Island, 69-61, at the ARC Arena on Wednesday evening.
Yeshiva (1-20, 0-15) had a strong second quarter, outscoring St. Joseph's Long Island (7-17, 4-11 Skyline) 16-10. It was the third quarter that would cost the Maccabees as the Golden Eagles' defense held them to just three points during the stanza. Both teams erupted in the fourth quarter, scoring 31 points each, but it was the Golden Eagles that were able to secure the victory.
The Maccabees trailed by seven in the beginning of the second quarter, but three baskets from beyond the arc by senior forward
Rachel Mirsky highlighted a 12-4 run to catapult Yeshiva into the lead, 23-22, with less than four minutes remaining in the opening half. The Golden Eagles rallied to take a 26-24 advantage, but sophomore forward
Michal Alge was able to lay the ball up and in, while being fouled, to tie the contest at 26, with five seconds remaining. She hit the free throw to complete the traditional three-point play, as Yeshiva took a one-point lead into halftime.
After a sluggish third quarter put the Maccabees in a seven-point hole, both teams kept exchanging baskets in the fourth. Junior forward
Simee Rosner converted a layup to pull Yeshiva within six, at 42-36, with 7:41 remaining. That that was as close as Yeshiva would get. In the closing minute of the contest, junior guard
Tess Blaustein converted a three-point basket to narrow the Golden Eagles' lead to 64-58. It would not be enough as St. Joseph's Long Island hit clutch free throws to secure the win.
For the contest, senior forward
Julia Owen led Yeshiva in scoring with 17 points. Alge just missed a double-double with nine points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Blaustein scored 10 points and grabbed seven boards, while Mirsky and Rosner each recorded eight points and combined for five assists. Senior guard
Ester Kerzner produced five points, while junior forward
Gavriela Colton scored four.
Yeshiva will be back in action on Saturday, for an 8:30 p.m. tip-off with Purchase College at the ARC Arena. It will be senior night as Yeshiva University will honor its six graduating seniors with a ceremony prior to the start of the contest.
