Basketball and Fencing Teams in Action This Weekend

NEW YORK, N.Y. – It is a busy weekend in Yeshiva University athletics, as four teams will be in action.

On Saturday evening, the Yeshiva University men's basketball team will battle St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn in a Skyline contest.  This is the second meeting between these two teams this season. The Bears won the first encounter on their home court, 85-68, back on December 14. Thanks to the Maccabees' four game Skyline winning streak, they now trail the Panthers of the College at Old Westbury by just one game in the loss column for first place in the conference standings.

For the season, senior forward Shelby Rosenberg leads the Maccabees with an average of 18.3 points per game. His 7.2 rebound per contest are also a team-high. Classmate Shaje Weiss scores 12.4 points a game, while junior forward Michael Berg is averaging 10.9 points and 3.7 assists per contest.

Live stats and live streaming video will be available for the men's contest. Be sure to print out the game program.

Also on Saturday night, the Yeshiva University women's basketball team will host St. Joseph's Brooklyn in a Skyline contest. This is the second meeting between these two teams this season. In the first encounter, on December 14, the Lady Bears earned the victory, 76-61. Last time out, Yeshiva dropped a conference game to Mount Saint Vincent on Wednesday. For the season, senior forward Julia Owen leads the Maccabees in scoring, with an average of 10.3 points per game, and dishes out 2.2 assists per contest. Sophomore forward Michal Alge grabs 11.3 rebounds per game.

On Sunday, Yeshiva University will be hosting the Mid Atlantic Conference Fencing Association (MACFA) Group B Round Robin. All matches will take place at the Max Stern Athletic Center, beginning at 9:00 a.m. This is the first time Yeshiva has hosted a men's fencing competition in four years.

Six teams, including the Yeshiva University men's fencing team, will face each other in a series of matches. The other five schools are Hunter College, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Stevens Institute of Technology, the College of New Jersey, and Army West Point.

Sophomore Spencer Brasch, who has won 28 out of 36 bouts so far this season, has led the Foil squad. In Epee, freshman James Alavosus has won 12 bouts, while junior Jack Sasson has 14 wins in Sabre duels.

Also on Sunday, the women's fencing team will compete in the Fairleigh Dickinson Invitational. The Maccabees will be competing against Stevens Institute of Technology, host FDU, Queens College, Hunter College, Drew University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, and LIU Post in a round robin format. The event is scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m.

Yeshiva last competed in team format at the Matt Lampell Hudson River Classic Invitational, hosted by Vassar College, on November 22. Yeshiva won 46 individual matches throughout the day. Highlights of the afternoon included the Maccabees defeating the epee squads of both Marist and Queens. Yeshiva's sabre squad also defeated the full sabre squad of LIU Post. In addition, the epee squad came very close to defeating Army and Drew with tight matches that could have gone either way. The saber squad also had a very close match before barely falling to City College of New York.

In epee, Rebecca Kerzner finished the day with eight wins with teammate Jamie Baum right behind her with seven wins. Kerzner also held the lone win against the very strong Vassar College who went on to win the tournament. Noam Dery added three wins to the squad. In sabre, Rani Silvert had a strong showing with seven wins. Sora Gordon added four wins, while Shana Horn and Sharona Maynard also brought in a win and came close to many others. In foil, Ariella Kerendian brought in a couple wins including the sole foil win against Drew University.
