Baseball Team's Strong Effort Not Enough Against NYU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CONEY ISLAND, N.Y.  – The Yeshiva University baseball team dropped both ends of its non-conference doubleheader to New York University, at MCU Park on Coney Island, on Friday afternoon. The Maccabees lost game one, 5-0, while falling in the second game, 8-4.

In the opening game, junior shortstop Josh Gurin and sophomore third baseman Jared Isaac each produced a hit. Gurin's hit was a double with one out in the top of the second. Junior pitcher Elan Paul started the game on the mound and took the loss, giving up four earned runs in five innings pitched.

In game two, the Maccabees (0-10) scored three runs in the top of the first to jump out to an early lead. Gurin started the rally by drilling a single and then stole second. Junior catcher Shmuli Goldis drove him in with a single to score Yeshiva's first run. After Goldis stole second, he scored thanks to Paul's double down the left field line. Two batters later, junior outfielder Chaim Rosenberg singled to left, scoring Paul from third to make it 3-0 in favor of Yeshiva.

After NYU (6-12) got one run back in the bottom of the first, Yeshiva scored its fourth run in the top of the second, as an error at third base scored sophomore infielder Mordechai Cohen for the Maccabees' fourth run. The Violets would turn momentum into their favor by scoring one run in the home half of the third, and two in the fourth, to take their first lead of the game, 5-4. The home team never looked back as NYU scored two runs in the fifth, and added an insurance run in the sixth, to clinch the sweep.

Sophomore pitcher Ari Schanzer started the game and took the loss for the Maccabees, giving up six earned runs in five innings pitched. Senior pitcher Benjamin Barman pitched one inning of relief.

The Maccabees will have their home opener on Sunday, as Yeshiva hosts John Jay in a non-conference doubleheader at Palisades Park, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
