Box Score 2 PALISADES PARK, N.J. – The Yeshiva University baseball team dropped both ends of its non-conference doubleheader to John Jay College, at the Palisades Park Baseball Field, on Sunday afternoon. The Maccabees dropped the first game, 8-3, while falling in the second contest, 12-2.
In the opening game, the Maccabees trailed 1-0 after three and a half innings. In the bottom of the fourth, Yeshiva scored two runs to grab the lead. Junior second baseman
Shmuli Goldis led off the inning with a single. After he stole second, junior catcher
Elan Paul bunted to third and reached first safely for a base hit, advancing Goldis to third. Paul and Goldis eventually scored on an error at first base, to put the Maccabees up by a run.
John Jay responded in the top of the fifth, scoring seven runs in the frame, to take a commanding 8-2 advantage. Yeshiva was able to get one run back in the bottom of the sixth, thanks to junior shortstop
Josh Gurin stealing second, as Paul scored from third on the throw. However, it would not be enough as John Jay won the game, 8-3.
Junior pitcher
Rephael Rosenberg started the game on the mound for the Maccabees, giving up one earned run and striking out two hitters, in three innings pitched to earn the no-decision.
In the second game, the Bloodhounds (5-13) scored four runs in the top of the second, to take a 4-0 lead, and never looked back. The Maccabees (0-12) scored both of their runs in the bottom of the sixth. Gurin singled with one out, and advanced to second on an error in center field. After Goldis produced a base hit, he stole second as the throw by the catcher went into the outfield. That allowed Gurin to score and Goldis moved to third. Goldis scored Yeshiva's second run thanks to an RBI groundout by Paul. That would be all for Yeshiva's offense as John Jay earned the sweep.
On the mound, senior pitcher
Benjamin Barman started the game and went four-plus innings, giving up four earned runs to take the loss. Rosenberg returned to the mound and gave up no earned runs in two innings of relief, while Goldis surrendered no earned runs in one inning on the mound. At the plate, Goldis produced three hits, stole just as many bases, and scored two runs during the doubleheader.
Yeshiva will return to Palisades Park on Tuesday, for a Skyline Conference doubleheader against Purchase College, beginning at 5:00 p.m.
