Box Score 2 PALISADES PARK, N.J. – The Yeshiva University baseball team put on a strong effort, but it was not enough as SUNY Maritime won both ends of a Skyline Conference doubleheader, at Palisades Park on Friday afternoon. Yeshiva fell in game one, 11-1, while dropping the second game, 8-3.
In the opening contest, the Privateers scored six runs in the first, and never looked back. The Maccabees only run came in the bottom of the sixth, as junior catcher
Shmuli Goldis laid down a bunt to first. He was able to beat the throw, which allowed classmate
Elan Paul to score.
For the game, Goldis and Paul each produced two hits and two stolen bases. Junior shortstop
Josh Gurin added a single and a stolen base of his own, while senior outfielder
Samuel Rhodes produced a hit and a walk. Paul started the game on the mound and gave up six earned runs, while striking out one batter, in five innings pitched to take the loss.
In game two, Yeshiva (0-22, 0-12 Skyline) struck first as senior outfielder
Binyamin Bromberg drew a walk with the bases loaded, and two outs, to score Paul. The Privateers (17-9, 6-2 Skyline) scored three unanswered runs, including two in the top of the fourth, to jump out to a 3-1 advantage.
The Maccabees countered with a two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth. Senior infielder
Ariel Bluman drew a walk and Paul followed with a single. With runners at the corners, Goldis drove in Bluman on a single to pull Yeshiva within one. Thanks to a pickoff attempt at first, which could not be handled by Maritime's first baseman, Paul scored the game-tying run to make it 3-3.
In the top of the sixth, Maritime exploded for five runs to break the game open. Paul produced a single in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough as Maritime completed the sweep.
For the game, Paul went 3-for-4, while senior first baseman
Benjamin Barman added a single. Sophomore pitcher
Ari Schanzer started the game and pitched 5.1 innings to take the loss. Junior pitcher
Rephael Rosenberg pitched 1.2 scoreless innings in relief.
The Maccabees will be back in action on Sunday, for a Skyline Conference doubleheader against Mount Saint Vincent, at Palisades Park beginning at 10:00 a.m. It is Senior Day as Barman, Bluman, Bromberg,
Zachary Perl, and Rhodes will be honored in a ceremony prior to first pitch.
