Box Score 2 NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University baseball team suffered two hard-fought losses to Mount Saint Mary, at the Mount Saint Mary Baseball Field, on Tuesday afternoon. The Maccabees dropped game one, 12-2, while narrowly being defeated in the second contest, 6-5.
In the opening contest, the Maccabees struck first, as senior first baseman
Zachary Perl scored on a wild pitch in the top of the second, to give Yeshiva a 1-0 advantage. The Knights would respond by scoring nine unanswered runs to take control of the game. The Maccabees scored their second run in the fifth, thanks to an RBI single by junior shortstop
Josh Gurin, scoring junior pitcher
Elan Paul. On the mound, Paul took the loss, but pitched a complete game.
In the second end of the doubleheader, Yeshiva scored four runs in the opening inning to take a 4-0 lead. Sophomore second baseman
Shmuli Goldis started the rally by drilling a single through the right side, scoring Paul to give Yeshiva a 1-0 lead. After sophomore outfielder
Ari Schanzer reached base on a single, Perl blasted a triple to right center, scoring two runs to extend Yeshiva's lead to 3-0. He would eventually score on a sacrifice fly by junior outfielder,
Chaim Rosenberg to make it 4-0 in favor of the Maccabees.
Mount Saint Mary scored six unanswered runs over the course of the next five innings to take a 6-4 advantage. The Maccabees got one run back in the seventh, as senior first baseman
Benjamin Barman scored on a throwing error by the shortstop. Gurin tried to score on the same play, but was thrown out at home for the second out. Schanzer flied out to left to end the game.
For the contest, Schanzer and Paul each picked up two hits. Junior pitcher
Rephael Rosenberg started the game and took the loss, but pitched a complete game. He gave up four earned runs.
The Maccabees will be back in action on Thursday, for a non-conference doubleheader against Vaughn College, at Palisades Park beginning at 5:00 p.m.
