Box Score JAMAICA, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's volleyball team dropped its 2017 season opener to York College, in three competitive sets, at the York College Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon. Set scores were 25-21, 25-19, and 31-29.
After YU (0-1) dropped two close sets, the Maccabees fell behind, 6-1, in the third. After Yeshiva inched closer, three kills by freshman outside hitter
Jonathan Greenberg highlighted a 5-0 run to give the Macs a 9-8 advantage. Later in the stanza, freshman outside hitter
Julien Saka slammed home a kill to put Yeshiva up 24-20, and a chance to win the set.
However, the Cardinals (1-6) scored four unanswered points to tie the game at 24. Both teams fought tooth and nail as a kill by Greenberg gave Yeshiva its eighth set-point opportunity of the frame, at 29-28. York scored three unanswered points to clinch the set and the match.
For the contest, Greenberg slammed home a match-high nine kills, while producing two blocks, had just as many assists, and scored one service ace. Saka added five kills and helped anchor the defense with eight digs. Senior defensive specialist
Hirschy Zaks led all players with 11 digs. Junior setter
Michael Klein had a team-high 12 assists to go along with seven digs, while junior middle blocker
Itai Guttman had three blocks with one service ace. Freshman setter
Sander Eizen had five assists with one ace.
The Maccabees will have their home opener on Wednesday, against Brooklyn College at the Max Stern Athletic Center, beginning at 8:00 p.m.
