Box Score NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's volleyball team dropped its home opener to Brooklyn College in straight sets, at the Max Stern Athletic Center, on Wednesday evening. Set scores were 25-14, 25-20, and 25-18.
Leading the way for Yeshiva (0-2) was freshman outside hitter
Jonathan Greenberg, who led the team with seven kills, scored a service ace, added two assists, and produced four digs. Sophomore middle blocker
Samuel Marcus and junior outside hitter
Mathew Rosenberg each had five kills, with the former having four blocks and the latter adding three blocks and four digs.
After dropping the first set, the Maccabees got off to a strong start in the second. Rosenberg and Greenberg combined for back-to-back kills to put YU up, 4-3. A little while later, Greenberg slammed home another kill to help Yeshiva regain the lead, 6-5. After the Bulldogs (5-3) jumped out to a 14-11 advantage, Marcus tallied a kill to pull the home team to within two. Later in the set, Marcus added another kill to narrow Brooklyn's lead to 22-20. However, the Bulldogs scored the last three points to take the set and put Yeshiva on the brink.
Brooklyn carried momentum into the third set by jumping out to a 5-1 lead. YU crawled its way back into the stanza, as a kill by Greenberg pulled the Blue and White to within two, at 13-11. Brooklyn would respond by scoring four unanswered points to take a commanding 17-11 advantage. Rosenberg got Yeshiva back into the set by scoring a kill to narrow the Bulldogs' lead to 21-17, but Brooklyn would score four of the stanza's final five points to clinch the set and the non-conference win.
For the evening, junior setter
Michael Klein led all players with 15 assists with three digs. Junior middle blocker
Itai Guttman had a solid defensive game with two blocks and just as many digs. Freshman defensive specialist
Sean Morady helped anchor the defense with three digs, while senior defensive specialist
Hirschy Zaks had just as many digs. Sophomore outside hitter
Ori Guttman, freshman setter
Sander Eizen, and sophomore outside hitter
Chaim Aryeh Rubin each produced a dig.
Yeshiva will be back at the Max Stern Athletic Center on Sunday, for a non-conference match at Lehman College. First serve is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
