Box Score 2 KINGS POINT, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University baseball team dropped both ends of its Skyline Conference double-header to the United States Merchant Marine Academy, in Kings Point, on Sunday afternoon. The Maccabees dropped game one, 14-0, while falling in the second end by a score of 16-4.
In the first game, the Mariners scored two runs in the second, and five runs in the third, to take a commanding 7-0 lead. That was all Merchant Marine would need as Yeshiva's lineup could not generate any pressure on the pitching and defense of USMMA.
For the contest, senior center fielder
Elan Paul and junior shortstop
Shmuli Goldis each went 1-for-3 with a single. Senior starting pitcher
Rephael Rosenberg stuck out three batters in four innings pitched, but took the loss.
In the second game, the Mariners (12-17, 9-9 Skyline) scored four runs in the first, and three in the second, to bust the game open.
In the top of the second, with runners on first and third with two outs, freshman right fielder
Joseph Goffstein singled down the right field line to score freshman catcher
Max Goldstein, putting Yeshiva (0-15, 0-12 Skyline) on the board. In the top of the sixth, sophomore left fielder
Aryeh Salovey singled up the middle. The next batter, Goldis, reached base on a fielder's choice as a throwing error by the USMMA third baseman advanced Salovey to third. During junior pitcher
Mordechai Cohen's at-bat, Goldis stole second as Salovey was able to steal home on the throw.
In the top of the seventh, junior first baseman
Eli Lipner scored on a passed ball for Yeshiva's third run. Later in the inning, a single by Paul scored Goffstein to make it 16-4, Mariners. That was all the Maccabees would score as USMMA recorded the final out to win the game.
For the second end, Goffstein went 2-for 3 with two singles, a run scored, and an RBI. Goldstein added a stolen base. Lipner and senior pitcher
Aryeh Minsky each drew a walk. On the mound, Goldis gave up no runs in 1.1 inning pitched, while Minsky struck out a batter in two scoreless innings in relief.
Yeshiva will head to MCU Park, out on Coney Island on Tuesday, for a non-conference double-header against NYU beginning at 5:00 p.m.
