Softball Concludes 2017 Season With Thrilling Walk-Off Win Over York in Game Two

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BRONX, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University softball team earned a split in the final double-header of the season, against York College, at Fordham University on Tuesday evening. The Maccabees rallied, but fell short in the opening game, 10-8, and then came from behind to win a walk-off thriller, 9-8.

In game one, York scored six runs in the top of the second to take a commanding lead. Yeshiva was able to get one run back in the bottom frame, as sophomore Samantha Cohen singled to left to score junior left fielder Devorah Lamm, who hit a double earlier in the inning, for Yeshiva's first run.

After giving up three more runs in the third, YU held York scoreless for the remaining four innings. In the bottom of the third, Yeshiva inched closer as sophomore catcher Sarah Hiller doubled to left center, scoring senior shortstop Hannah Dubin. After advancing to third, Hiller would eventually score thanks to a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior second baseman Liat Wasserman to pull the Maccabees to within 10-3.

In the home half of the sixth, Wasserman's RBI single scored Dubin to cap off a three-run inning, pulling the Macs to within striking distance at 10-6.

Cohen was able to get out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the seventh, capping off four straight scoreless inning in the circle.

In the home half of the seventh, Yeshiva trailed by four runs with runners on first and second, two outs. Junior center fielder Ellie Chase lined a single to center, scoring Cohen to inch the Maccabees closer. Dubin then drew a walk to load the bases. Hiller was up next and showed great patience at the plate, drawing a walk to score junior first baseman Elisa Alweis to shrink York's lead to 10-8, with the bases loaded and two outs. However, York would be able to get out of the jam thanks to a popup to second, and the visiting team clinched the first game.

For the game, Cohen pitched a complete game giving up just four earned runs and striking out three batters, but took the loss. Wasserman went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in. Chase and Lamm each went 2-for-4, with the former scoring a run, drawing a walk, and stealing a base. Hiller drove in two runs, while sophomore right fielder Leah Feder crossed home plate once. Dubin drew three walks and scored two runs.

In game two, York (1-23) jumped out to a 3-1 lead early in the contest. The Maccabees (2-22) answered with four runs in the bottom of the third, highlighted by a two-run double by freshman third baseman Gabi Chutter and an RBI single by Wasserman, to give Yeshiva the lead.

The Cardinals would respond by scoring four runs in the next frame to put the Macs in another hole.

Down 8-4, the Maccabees would answer by scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth, highlighted by Lamm's two run-single with two outs, to get to within striking distance.

In the home half of the sixth, with the bases loaded and one out, Wasserman hit the ball deep to left field. The play was botched by York's left fielder, allowing Chase to score the game-tying run. Wasserman was credited with a run batted in. However, the Cardinals escaped the jam without giving up any more runs in the inning, and the score remained 8-8 heading into the seventh.

Cohen prevented York from scoring in the top of the seventh, and Yeshiva had an opportunity to win it in the bottom half. Feder led off the frame with a walk. She advanced to second on Alweis' groundout, and then advanced to third on a passed ball in the next at-bat. Chase hit a fly ball deep to left. York's left fielder stood under it, but the ball bounced off her glove, allowing Feder to score the game-winning run. Chase was credited with the walk-off RBI. YU won the last game of the season, 9-8.

For the contest, Wasserman went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in. Chase scored one run, drew a walk, and stole a base along with her game-clinching RBI. Lamm drove in two runs, scored one, picked up a hit, drew a walk, and stole a base. Junior designated player Shoshana Rozenberg produced a single and scored a run, while Chutter crossed home plate once. Feder picked up a hit, while Alweis and Hiller each walked twice and scored a run. Dubin doubled, walked, and scored a run.

In the circle, Cohen pitched her 20th complete game of the year, striking out five batters to pick up the win.

The softball team will be back in action in the 2018 season.
