Leifer and Turell Earn Skyline Major Awards; Halpert Lands Spot on All-Conference First Team

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Skyline released its men's basketball all-conference teams and major award winners, on Monday morning, and Yeshiva University is heavily represented. Junior forward Gabriel Leifer was selected as the Skyline Player of the Year, while making his first appearance on the all-conference first team. Freshman guard Ryan Turell earned Rookie of the Year accolades from the conference, as well as a spot on the All-Skyline first team. Junior guard Simcha Halpert earned all-conference first team honors for the second year in a row.

Each of the 11 Skyline men's basketball head coaches casted a vote to determine the all-conference teams, as well as the year-end award winners.

Yeshiva's three honorees played key roles during a successful season in which the men's basketball team won a program-record 17 straight games, earned a share of the Skyline Regular Season title, and made it all the way to the conference championship game.

"While the season didn't end the way we wanted, these awards are a great recognition of the hard work these players put in day in and day out," Yeshiva University head coach Elliot Steinmetz said. "These are special young men who have been leaders and trailblazers for our program and it's nice to see them get these deserved awards from the conference coaches."

Leifer finishes the season as the top rebounder in the Skyline with an average of 12 boards per game. He also distributed a conference-best 5.4 assists per contest and led all Skyline players with 2.4 blocks per game. The second-year forward shot 56.1 percent from the field in 2018-19, which ranks him second in the league. In Yeshiva's semi-final victory over No. 3 Old Westbury, he scored 31 points, grabbed 18 rebounds, and distributed seven assists. In the championship game at No. 1 Farmingdale State, the Lawrence native led all participants with 27 points, 15 rebounds, and eight assists.

Despite only being a freshman, Turell won the Skyline scoring title with an average of 20.1 points per game. The first-year guard had the third highest field-goal percentage in the league (53.9 percent) and was fourth overall in free-throw percentage (80.6 percent). The Los Angeles native scored 29 points in his first Skyline playoff game against Old Westbury. The rookie phenom produced 20 points with six rebounds in the championship contest at FSC.

Halpert has scored 1,345 career points which ranks him No. 8 on Yeshiva's all-time scoring list. He finished the year as the leader in the conference with 3.8 successful shots from beyond the arc per game and a .444 shooting percentage from 3-point range. The third-year guard scored 16 points in the semi-final game against Old Westbury, and then added 14 points in the Skyline final at Farmingdale.
