NEW YORK – This week's Yeshiva University Student-Athletes of the Week are sophomore forward
Mahlia Leventhal of the Yeshiva University women's basketball team, and senior forward
Gabriel Leifer of the Yeshiva University men's basketball team.
Leventhal led Yeshiva to a 2-1 record, this week. She scored seven points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and dished out three assists in YU's victory over The King's College (N.Y.), last Thursday. The Great Neck native just missed a double-double with nine points and a career-high 18 rebounds at the United States Merchant Marine Academy, on Sunday. In the Macs' Skyline road victory over the Gryphons of Sarah Lawrence College, on Tuesday, Leventhal tacked on six points, 16 rebounds, two assists, and just as many blocks.
It was a big week for Leifer, as he became the 30
th player in the men's basketball program's 89-year history to score 1,000 career points. He reached that milestone thanks to a 3-point field goal in the second half against USMMA, last Saturday. The Lawrence native was also honored by both the Skyline Conference and the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association as its Player of the Week and was selected to the D3hoops.com Team of the Week. He now has 1,037 career points.
Leifer also came up big in Yeshiva's road victory over Sarah Lawrence College, on Tuesday. With YU down by one in the closing seconds, Leifer drained the game-winning 3-point field goal with six ticks left on the clock to propel YU to the Skyline victory, 74-72.
Leifer's strong effort this year played a key role in Yeshiva earning a national ranking for the first time in school history, as the Maccabees earned a spot at No. 24 in the latest D3hoops.com Men's Top 25 National Poll.
