Elliot Steinmetz and four-year men's basketball standout
Ryan Turell ('22) were honored by the Jewish Sports Heritage Association, Inc., at its Fifth Annual Induction Ceremony at Temple Israel, Lawrence, on Sunday, April 23. Steinmetz was selected as the inaugural Marty Riger Outstanding Jewish Coach of the Year, while Turell was named the Jay Fiedler Outstanding Jewish College Male Athlete of the Year.
This past season, Steinmetz led a Macs team that had 10 rookies out of 16 players on the roster to a virtual tie for first place in the Skyline standings, a victory in the opening round of the Skyline Championships against St. Joseph's University Long Island, and a berth in the semifinal round of the league tournament.
During Steinmetz's illustrious coaching career at YU, the Maccabees have won three Skyline Conference Championships, two NCAA Tournament games, sustained a 50-game winning streak from 2019 until 2021, a No. 1 national ranking in the D3hoops.com National Poll, and a berth in the Skyline Conference Championships every season he has been the head coach at YU.
In 2019-20, Steinmetz was named the National Division III Coach of the Year, by D3hoops.com, and earned the Glenn Robinson National Coach of the Year Award.
Turell becomes the second YU player to be honored as the Jay Fiedler Outstanding Jewish College Male Athlete of the Year. His teammate,
Gabriel Leifer ('22), earned the honor in April of 2021. Turell currently plays professionally for the Motor City Cruise, the NBA G League affiliate of the Detroit Pistons.
During his time at YU, Turell helped propel the Yeshiva University men's basketball team to a pair of Skyline Conference Championships, a berth in the Sweet 16 round after winning two NCAA Tournament games in 2020, a No. 1 national ranking in the D3hoops.com Top 25 National Poll, and a 50-game winning streak which lasted from 2019 until 2021.
Turell was named the National Association of Basketball Coaches Division III National Player of the Year, was selected to the D3hoops.com All-America first team three times, earned three Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association Player of the Year honors, won two Skyline Player of the Year awards, made the All-Skyline first team every year it was bestowed, and earned the Travis Grant Award for leading all three NCAA divisions in scoring during his senior year (27.1 ppg). He tops Yeshiva's all-time career scoring list (2,158 points), set the school's all-time single season scoring record (786 points in 2021-22), and netted the most points in a game in team history (51 points against Manhattanville College on November 28, 2021).
The Yeshiva University men's basketball team will return to the court in November of 2023.
