CCNY defeats Yeshiva in Women's Fencing

(New York, NY) - Junior Chana Gila Ovits (Brooklyn, NY/Prospect Park Yeshiva) won twice, and sophomore Abby Phillips (Buffalo Grove, IL/Adali Stevenson), sophomore Elizabeth Penn (New Rochelle, NY/Bronx Science) and senior Janine Rothenberg (East Brunswick, NJ/Bruriah) each won a bout, but the Yeshiva University Women's Fencing team lost 21-6 to CCNY on Dec. 10 at CCNY. With the loss, Yeshiva is now 0-9 for the 2008-09 season.

Epee competition proved to be the most exciting series of the match as Gila Ovits opened with a 5-3 win, but CCNY rallied for four straight wins to take a commanding 4-1 lead. A 5-1 win by Rothernberg was followed by a 5-2 win by Penn and a 5-1 win by Gila Ovits to make it 4-4. Rothenberg then stepped to the floor with the opportunity to give Yeshiva the overall win in Epee, but a thrilling 5-4 loss gave CCNY the victory.

The Beavers all but clinched the match with a 7-2 win in Sabre as Phillips notched a 5-2 win, and senior Sophie Marmor (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) was a 5-2 winner during the third round of competition. CCNY then swept all nine rounds of Foil for the 21-6 final.

The Maccabees return to action on Jan. 21, 2009 when they travel to Hunter College for a 6:00 p.m. match.
