Women’s Fencing Grabs First Victory of the Season 14-13 Over CCNY

NEW YORK, NY – The women's fencing team captured their first victory of the 2009 campaign with a narrow 14-13 victory over the visiting Beavers of CCNY. After the Sabre and Epee events, the Macs were had just enough points to win regardless of the Foil results. That proved key as CCNY's foil squad swept their bouts 9-0.

Abigail Phillips and Brahna Kessler each won 2 of their 3 Sabre events, giving the team 4 of their 6 points for the weapon. Michal Gilboa and Rebecca Sperling grabbed the other two victories, to put the Macs up 6-3 early in the competition.

Epee proved to be the major difference maker for Yeshiva, as the Macs won 8-1 for their 14th point of the match. Both Elizabeth Penn and Chana Gila Ovits swept in all three of their bouts. Leah Avner won two of three, coming just short of a 9-0 sweep as a team. CCNY swept Foil 9-0.

The MACS are off for break until late January, when they play host to Hunter on January 28th. The match will begin at 8PM.
