(Long Island, NY) – Senior Max Gornish (St. Louis, MO/Block Yeshiva) belted his first career home run, scored twice, and drove in three runs, and junior David Kesselman (West Hempstead, NY/DRS Yeshiva) went 2 for 3, but the Yeshiva University Baseball team dropped both ends of a unique dual-site doubleheader, 19-4 to St. Joseph's (LI) and 16-4 to SUNY Old Westbury on Sunday. With the loses, YU is now 3-18 overall and 1-15 in Skyline Conference play.
The opener saw YU head to St. Joseph's (LI) and after Gornish drove in a run and scored on a Binyamin Cooper (Teaneck, NJ/MTA) sacrifice fly, Yeshiva trailed 4-2 after the first inning. However, from there, St. Joseph's scored 15 unanswered runs to take a commanding 19-2 lead and cruised to victory, outhitting Yeshiva 26-4. Yeshiva finally ended the Golden Eagle run in the eighth inning when Gornish connected for a two-run blast to make it 19-4.
The nightcap took place at Old Westbury where the fine pitching of junior Zachary Weiner (Sharon, MA/Maimonides) kept things close for a while, but seven Yeshiva errors led to eight unearned runs, and Old Westbury scored 12 runs during the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings to break the game wide open. Weiner allowed only two earned runs over six innings, but Yeshiva combined for only four hits against a powerful Old Westbury team.
The Maccabees return to action on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to John Jay College for a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader.
