(Yonkers, NY) – Sophomore Zachary Stern (Columbus, OH/Columbus Torah Academy) scored his third goal of the week, and junior Daniel Rosenthal (Panama City, Panama/IAE) stopped six out of eight shots, but the Yeshiva University Men's Soccer team suffered a 2-1 heartbreaking loss to Skyline Conference rival Mount Saint Vincent on Wednesday night at Tibbetts Brook Park in Yonkers, New York. With the loss, YU is now 0-6 overall and 0-4 in Skyline Conference play.
Mount Saint Vincent took a quick lead, scoring at the 11:01 on a direct kick into the upper corner. The tally was the only score during an otherwise even first half. Mount Saint Vincent had a 9-2 edge in shots, but Rosenthal stopped five of the six shots he faced.
17 minutes into the second half, the Dolphins struck again, scoring on a breakaway to make it 2-0. However, the goal would be Mount Saint Vincent's final offensive pressure of the night as from there, Yeshiva grabbed momentum, and nearly evened the game. With 10 minutes remaining in the game, Stern forced a MSV turnover, went in a breakaway, and scored his third goal of the week to make it 2-1. The tally tied Yeshiva's entire team goal total from the 2007 season. The final 10 minutes of the game saw YU do everything within its power to tie the score, but the Mount Saint Vincent defense held, forcing YU into its third one-goal loss during a five-game span.
Overall, Mount Saint Vincent outshot YU 13-9 with Yeshiva holding a 7-4 shooting edge during the second half. Stern accounted for four of Yeshiva's nine shots.
The Maccabees return to action on Sunday, Sept. 21 when they travel to St. Joseph's (LI) for a 1:00 p.m. Skyline Conference game.
