(Yonkers, NY) – Sophomore Mark Rocklin (Rochester, NY/HALB) made 12 saves in his collegiate goalie debut, and fellow sophomore Zachary Stern (Columbus, OH/Columbus Torah Academy) enjoyed another strong game, but the Yeshiva University Men's Soccer team fell to 0-7 with an 8-0 loss to St. Joseph's (LI) on Sunday afternoon at the Diamond in the Pines Complex in Coram, New York. With the loss, YU is now 0-5 in Skyline Conference play.
In a game that was far closer than the score indicated, Yeshiva played a solid first half during which the host Golden Eagles scored only 55 seconds in the game, but then struggled under relentless Yeshiva pressure during the opening 45 minutes. Moments after St. Joseph's initial tally, Stern had a one-on-one breakaway after a terrific defensive play, but was unable to convert his opportunity. Stern's breakway was one of several Yeshiva scoring chances during the first half, including a penalty kick, but the Maccabees were denied each time. St. Joseph's scored at 20:08 and then again 20 minutes later to take a 3-0 lead into halftime.
The Golden Eagles scored three times during a six-minute span early in the second half to all but put the game out of reach. Despite the 6-0 score, Yeshiva continued to pressure St. Joseph's but several scoring opportunities were turned away once again. St. Joseph's battled back and scored twice in a 20-second span with less than two minutes remaining in the game for the 8-0 final.
Rocklin was outstanding, as was Stern, who had three of Yeshiva's five shots. The Maccabees were outshot 31-5, and allowed nine corner kicks to Yeshiva's single attempt.
Yeshiva returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 23 when the host Mount Saint Mary for an 8:00 p.m. Skyline Conference contest at Tibbetts Brook Park in Yonkers, New York.
