Men's Soccer Loses Hard Fought Contest to St. Joseph's-Long Island

Box Score

YONKERS, N.Y.— The Yeshiva men's soccer team was defeated in a Skyline Conference matchup Wednesday evening as the Maccabees lost to St. Joseph's-Long Island 2-1 on a brisk evening at Tibbetts Brook Park.

After a somewhat even keel start to the contest, the Maccabees grabbed momentum during the middle stages of the first half. Yeshiva took the first five shots of the game to hold a 5-0 advantage in shots through the first twenty minutes of play. During that span, the Maccabees missed a golden chance to take the lead during the twentieth minute. Leon Aboudi launched a shot that clanked off the crossbar, before Daniel Benchimol blasted a rebound shot that the St. Joseph's goalkeeper narrowly got his fingers on as it lifted over the net. It was the last shot of the half for Yeshiva.

Meanwhile the visiting Golden Eagles fired five shots of their own before halftime, two of which were on goal, but no goals through the first forty-five minutes of soccer as the teams were deadlocked 0-0 at halftime.

St. Joseph's continued its momentum into the second half and took a 1-0 lead on a goal by George Ekstrom three and a half minutes in. Then during the sixty-first minute, the Golden Eagles scored again on a goal by Fabio Alves, with an assist coming from Terrance Dzus.

But the Maccabees did not falter, and Yeshiva spent most of the final fifteen minutes of the game in the St. Joseph's end. Then with 3:24 remaining, the Maccabees got on the board via a goal by Jack Sztrigler, with an assist by Itamar Ben David. But the Maccabees could not score the tying goal. Yeshiva continued with having the ball in the Golden Eagles end most of the final three minutes, but last ditch efforts in the waning moments fell short.

After taking five shots each in the first half, St. Joseph's held a 7-4 advantage in the second half for a 12-9 advantage in the contest.

Doron David made seven saves in net for Yeshiva, while Avery Gomez saved three.
