The Yeshiva baseball team fought valiantly against CCNY in a doubleheader, but fell just short in the end as the Maccabees lost a pair of exciting games on Monday evening, 11-5 and 1-0 at the Baseball Heaven Complex in Yaphank, N.Y.
The loss leaves Yeshiva at 0-4 (0-4 CUNYAC) this season, while CCNY is now 2-2 (2-0 CUNYAC).
In the opener, the Maccabees fought back from a 5-0 first inning deficit to tie the score after the sixth inning. The host Beavers put up five in the opening frame, before Yeshiva came back with a run in the bottom half to trail 5-1 after one inning. The Maccabees kept CCNY off the board for the next five innings, while Yeshiva scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth and another two in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game in the late stages.
But in the top of the seventh, CCNY sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six runs to break the game open en route to the win.
Yeshiva had three hits in the opener, all in which came in the sixth inning.
Jonathan Berger,
Joseph Miller and
Zev Friend had one hit each in the first game, while
Jake Frankel and
Zachary Perl had one run batted in each. The Maccabees earned eight base on balls passes in game one.
Jonathan Gardner pitched well for Yeshiva. After a rough first inning, he settled in and kept the Beavers off the board until the seventh. Overall, he pitched 6.2 innings and allowed 10 runs (seven earned) on 12 hits and struck out three.
In the second game, sophomore pitcher
Benjy Blumenthal tossed a gem, allowing just one run on two hits over seven innings. CCNY's lone run came in the fourth inning when the Beavers' Michael Smith drew a one out walk, then stole second, advance to third on a balk and scored on a wild pitch. The run turned out to be the game winner.
Yeshiva got two hits in game two, one off the bat of
Elan Paul and the other from
Zachary Perl, both singles.
Yeshiva's best chance to score came in the fourth inning as the Maccabees had a runner on third and one out, but could not punch home the run.
Yeshiva is back in action on Tuesday for a game against Maritime College at Teft High School at 8 p.m.
