Poughkeepsie, N.Y.- The Yeshiva University women's fencing team traveled to Vassar College on Sunday, November 15th for their season opener. The team was defeated by eight tough opponents but walked away with highlights to guide them into the remainder of their season.
The Maccabees lost to the University of Florida 0-27, Wellesley College 3-24, Fairleigh Dickinson University 2-25, Army 3-24, Haverford College 1-26, Sacred Heart University 1-26, Tufts University 2-25, and against in-city rival Hunter College 7-20.
Yeshiva won 19 individual matches, including 10 in epee, 6 in sabre, and 3 in foil. 7 of those 19 wins came from first year fencers.
The highlight of the day came from Yeshiva's epee squad when they defeated Hunter's epee squad 5-4. In epee, Jamie Baum led the squad with five wins, while Rebecca Kerzner added four wins, and Sima Fried added one.
In sabre, Rani Silvert led the Maccabees in wins with six.
In foil, Tamar Shiller won two matches to lead the squad while almost taking the win in four others that ended 4-5. Nili Greenberg completed the day with one win.
"I'm very proud of the whole team who exhibited great heart in the face of overwhelming odds and maintained a positive attitude throughout the entire intense, grueling day," commented head coach Judy Cummins.
The team will head back to Vassar College this Sunday, November 22nd for the Matt Lampell Hudson River Invitational where they will compete against six teams beginning at 10am.
