Poughkeepsie, N.Y.- The Yeshiva University women's fencing team competed in the the Matt Lampell Hudson River Classic Invitational on Sunday hosted by Vassar College.
Yeshiva came out on top against Marist College by a score of 18-9. Aside from that win, Yeshiva lost to Army 6-21, Drew University 4-23, City College of New York 10-17, Queens College 7-20, LIU 15-12, and Vassar College 1-26.
Yeshiva won 46 individual matches throughout the day. Highlights of the day included the Maccabees defeating the epee squads of both Marist and Queens. Yeshiva's sabre squad also defeated the full sabre squad of LIU Post. In addition, the epee squad came very close to defeating Army and Drew with tight matches that could have gone either way. The saber squad also had a very close match before barely falling to City College of New York.
In epee,
Rebecca Kerzner finished the day with 8 wins with teammate
Jamie Baum right behind her with 7 wins. Kerzner also held the lone win against the very strong Vassar College who went on to win the tournament.
Noam Dery added 3 wins to the squad.
In sabre,
Rani Silvert had a strong showing with 7 wins.
Sora Gordon added 4 wins while
Shana Horn and
Sharona Maynard also brought in a win and came close to many others.
In foil,
Ariella Kerendian brought in a couple wins including the sole foil win against Drew University.
"Everyone has improved quite a bit in the last week and they have become more comfortable with the competition experience," said head coach
Judy Cummins who is happy with her young team's performance.
The team will be back on the road again on Sunday, December 6
th for the NIWFA Invitational at the Livingston Recreation Center at Rutgers University. This will be an individual event and will begin at 8:20 am.
