NEW YORK – The Yeshiva University women's fencing team competed in the Eastern Women's Fencing Conference (EWFC) Championships, at the Hunter Sportsplex, on Sunday afternoon. For the third year in a row, and a record-breaking fifth time overall, the Maccabees earned the Roi Green Memorial Team Spirit Award.
"I am so proud of our fencers who joyously and loudly supported each other and fenced their best against the worst odds we've experienced as a team to date," Yeshiva University Head Coach
Judy Cummins said. "I thank the EWFC and all the coaches for their continuing support."
Leading the way for the Maccabees was junior
Batsheva Lasky, who won 11 epee duels. The New Hempstead native qualified for the individual single-elimination tournament and finished 13
th overall among epee fencers.
Yeshiva dropped team duels to Vassar College (27-0), Stevens (27-0), Johns Hopkin University (26-1), Drew University (23-4), The City College of New York (21-6), Hunter College (14-8), and Haverford College (24-3).
"I think the team did incredibly well considering we had such a small team," Cummins said.
Against City College, Laskey went 3-0 in epee combat, while sophomore
Ilana Aidman claimed two out of three sabre battles. Junior
Talya Stehley picked up one foil victory.
Lasky continued to do well, winning all three of her epee battles against Hunter College, while Aidman won a sabre duel.
In the team duel versus Drew University, Lasky once again went 3-0 in epee competition. Junior
Adina Passy clinched one epee win of her own during the battle with the Rangers.
Against Haverford, Lasky won two out of three epee duels, while sophomore
Ruth Lando was victorious in one foil battle.
Stehley claimed Yeshiva's sole victory over Johns Hopkins University, as she won a foil battle.
Yeshiva will compete in the Wagner College Invitational on Sunday, February 23, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
