POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University women's fencing team competed in the Matt Lampell Hudson River Invitational, hosted by Vassar College at the Walker Field House, on Sunday afternoon. The Maccabees ended the day on a strong note by earning their second victory of the season, defeating the Engineers of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute by a score of 13-11.
Earlier in the day, YU dropped three bouts to Vassar (18-9, 16-1, and 26-1), and fell to RPI (14-12), Drew University (23-4), and Army (27-0).
In YU's victory over RPI, the sabre team went 9-for-9 in its bouts. Junior
Chaya Ehrenburg, freshman
Rachel Jian, and junior
Leorah Lalezari each won a duel. Junior
Julia Polster earned an epee win, while
Rebecca Quintas tallied a foil victory.
The Maccabees' sabre team also earned a decisive 9-0 triumph in the first battle with RPI. Ehrenburg, Jian, and Lalezari each picked up a victory to lead the sabre squad to the win. Sophomore
Sheina Sara Huisman picked up the lone foil victory against the Engineers.
In Yeshiva's first match against the host-Brewers, the sabre team once again earned a 6-3 win.
Against Drew, Ehrenburg went 2-1 in sabre combat, while Lalezari had a victory of her own. Huisman won a battle with the foil weapon.
Lalezari earned another pair of sabre wins against Vassar.
Yeshiva will take a break and then compete in the Eric Sollee MIT Invitational on Sunday, January 30.
