HACKENSACK, N.J. – The Yeshiva University women's fencing team competed in the Fairleigh Dickinson University Invitational, at the Rothman Center, on Sunday morning. Yeshiva earned a win over The City College of New York, 15-11, while dropping team duels to Stevens Institute of Technology (26-1), New Jersey Institute of Technology (22-5), Drew University (25-2), the United States Naval Academy (19-8), FDU (16-11), and New York University (27-0).
In the victory over CCNY, the YU epee team earned the win by a score of 8-1. Juniors
Shaina Matveev and
Julia Polster each won two bouts, while rookie
Elizabeth Janssen won a battle of her own. The Maccabees won the sabre matchup, 5-4. Junior
Leorah Lalezari won both of her duels using the sabre weapon.
Yeshiva's epee team edged out Navy by a score of 5-4. Matveev and Polster each went 2-1, while junior
Ilana Aidman won the battle that clinched the epee squad's victory. Also, against Navy, senior
Ruth Lando won a foil matchup, while Lalezari and freshman
Rachel Jian picked up sabre victories.
The sabre and epee teams earned wins over FDU, 5-4 and 6-3 respectively. Jian clinched the win for the sabre squad by winning her duel, 5-2. Lalezari notched another sabre victory.
Polster and Matveev each won an epee battle against NJIT with the former also adding an epee win over Stevens.
In the matchup against Drew, Lalezari won a sabre battle, while junior
Rebecca Quintas earned a victory using the foil weapon.
Yeshiva will compete in the Eastern Women's Fencing Conference Championships, at Vassar College, on Sunday. The meet is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m.
