POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University women's fencing team competed in the Eastern Women's Fencing Conference (EWFC) Championships, on the campus of Vassar College, on Sunday morning. YU earned a win over The City College of New York, 16-11. The Blue and White dropped duels to Hunter College (17-10), Vassar College (26-1), Wellesley College (25-2), Denison University (23-4), Haverford College (22-5), Stevens Institute of Technology (24-3), Johns Hopkins University (26-1), and Drew University (3-24).
During the Macs' victory over the Beavers, juniors
Julia Polster,
Shaina Matveev, and
Elizabeth Janssen each won a battle to help lead the epee team to the victory. Classmate
Leorah Lalezari went 2-1 in sabre battles, including one that helped the sabre team clinch the team victory. Freshman
Rachel Jian won a sabre duel of her own. Junior
Rebecca Quintas won two out of three foil battles, while seniors
Ilana Aidman and
Ruth Lando each won a match of their own.
Th epee team earned a convincing victory over Hunter, 8-1. Polster and Matveev contributed to that score with a win each. Lando won a foil bout and Lalezari tallied a win using the sabre weapon.
Polster went 2-1 in epee duels against Haverford. Quintas and Lando each won a foil battle over the Fords. Junior
Sarah Greenberg got the lone sabre win for the Maccabees.
Against Stevens, Polster took two out of three epee duels. Lando tallied a foil win.
In the matchup with Denison, Polster got the lone epee win. Lalezari won a sabre battle against both Vassar and Johns Hopkins.
Against Drew, Lando and Quintas each got a foil win. Lalezari had yet another win using the sabre weapon.
Polster and Lalezari won a match against Wellesley, with the former winning an epee bout and the latter being victorious in a sabre duel.
In the individual results, Polster and Matveev finished 13
th and 14
th respectively in the epee standings. Jian earned 13
th place, while Lalezari finished 15
th in the sabre standings. For foil, Lando finished 17
th overall, while Quintas claimed 18
th place in the standings.
Yeshiva will compete in the Brian Palestis Memorial Invitational, on the campus of Wagner College, next Sunday. The meet is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
