Malky Perlberger wears many hats as a student at Yeshiva University. She is a student-athlete who played for both the school's women's soccer and softball teams. The dual-athlete is also the co-president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Perlberger played for the Yeshiva University women's soccer team for two seasons (2018 and 2019), appearing in 22 matches during that stretch. She tallied a goal in Yeshiva's 2019 season-opener against Fisher College, on August 30. Primarily a forward, Perlberger also made an appearance in net this past season, during YU's Skyline match at Manhattanville College, on September 20. The Philadelphia native made a save in relief.Â
"Malky was 100% heart, hustle, and dedication," Yeshiva University Head Women's Soccer Coach
Marc Zharnest said. "I knew every time she stepped on the field, we would get 100%. The joy on her face when she played was contagious. She was always ready to take one for the team and I will miss her Philly swagger on the sidelines."
The health science major also had a solid softball career, producing 20 hits, scoring 15 runs, and producing 12 RBI in two seasons (2018 and 2019). On March 26, 2019, she lined three hits in Yeshiva's non-conference doubleheader at Lehman College. Three days later, Perlberger added two more hits, scored twice, and picked up a run batted in during the second end of a twin bill at the College at Old Westbury. Thanks to her strong performance, the infielder earned a spot on the Skyline Conference Weekly Honor Roll, on April 1.
"Malky has been someone who quickly learned how to be a part of our program," Yeshiva University Head Softball Coach
Danielle DeStaso said. "She became a leader, as well as comic relief, for us all. It has been a great experience being able to coach her."
There were plenty of moments and experiences at Yeshiva that Perlberger will cherish for the rest of her life. "I have so many favorite moments at YU," Perlberger said. "When I won my first softball game my freshman year (a 26-15 victory at York College N.Y. on March 18, 2018), to winning my first soccer game my senior year (a 2-0 victory over King's College N.Y. on September 1, 2019). There are too many favorite moments to name but if I had to it would be when I put on my soccer and softball jersey for the first time. I wasn't just putting on a regular jersey, I was putting on a jersey that represents YU. Being a Maccabee is special and I'm happy I got a chance to be one and represent Jewish athletes."
Being a student-athlete isn't the only highlight of Perlberger's time at YU. During her tenure as co-president of SAAC, she volunteered at the New York Pantry, along with 10 other volunteers from YU, on February 7. They worked in the kitchen and served food. "It was a real eye-opener and an incredible experience," Perlberger said. "This year, SAAC was able to bring many more student-athletes and it was amazing to see how everyone managed their appointed tasks and how when we all worked together, we were able to perform such a kind act of giving back. We were able to make our community members' days a little brighter."
Perlberger also served as an EMT in Ezras Nashim, a student-run EMT group that provides immediate medical assistance if needed for fellow Stern students and staff.
The multi-sport athlete's career goal is to be a nurse practitioner in either pediatrics or the emergency room. She is currently in the process of applying for nursing school and is waiting to hear back from the institutions. Perlberger hopes to become a registered nurse, which will allow her to then become a nurse practitioner.Â
When asked what she would miss most about Yeshiva University, Perlberger did not hesitate to respond. "I will definitely miss playing with my softball and soccer teammates," Perlberger said. "I had a chance to meet and play amongst some truly talented people, who pushed me to be better and do better. I will miss working and being coached by my amazing coaches. I will miss the incredible athletics staff who were always there to help. I will also miss cheering on my fellow Maccabees from other sports."
Perlberger earned a spot on the Skyline Conference Academic Honor Roll twice, an honor that bestows student-athletes who earned a GPA of 3.30 or higher during the semester in which they were in-season.
"I just want to say thank you to everyone in athletics for giving me the opportunity to play the sports that I love," Perlberger said. "Thank you to everyone on the athletic staff for supporting, guiding, and helping me bounce back from injuries. I will truly miss my time at YU and I will especially miss being a Maccabee."
